BRITAIN AND AMERICA ■ SIR EDWARD GREY'S STATISTICS 1 CAUSE A SENSATION. - Copenhagen, January 12. The Scandinavian' figures mentioned in Sir Edward Grey's " reply to the American Note on the subject of contraband has caused a public sensation. The newspapers demand the publication of detailed statistics. The Foreign Office explains that many articles in 1014 came direct instead of via Hamburg; also that Scandinavians are now compelled to purchase in America many goods formerly bought from the belligerent nations. Sir Edward Grey's reply to thft American Note pointed out that sinoe the war 773 American steamers had left destined to Holland, Scandinavia, and Italy, and forty-five consignments or cargoes had been placed in the Prize Court. —"Times" and Sydney. In his interim reply to the 'American: Note, Sir Edward Grey quoted statistics showing that New York's exports had largely increased during November, 1914, as compared with November, 1913. ; "The huge increase in neutrals' importation of American copper creates a strong presumption that the bullf of it' is intended for the enemyjs use." It was imperative, he continued, that Britain should stop copper shipments not genuinely destined for neutrals. His Government liacl positive evidence that . four Swedish consignments wore des- ' tined for Gormany. PROPAGANDISTS AT WORIL (Reo. January 14, 0.10 a.m.) London, January 13. The "TimesV' Washington corres* pondent states that German propagandists are showing great activity over Sir Edward Grey's reply, and flooding the newspapers with arguments showing that Britain's sea domination. is worse for America, than German militarism.
