Chrlstohuroh, January 12.
At Riccarton this morning practically all the horses engaged l at the Wellington Cup meeting were extended on the grass track.
Merry Trick and Harlequin were ridl tt u i over * mile - Harlequin, wap had a long way the worst of the weights, showed most pace, but owing to greenness was running about the i a m , good doal over the last furlong. The time was good. Snub, Orian'de, and Treadfire were associated over four furlongs. Treadhre got the worst of a straggling start, i U ij SO i°- n ran U P leveL He not hold his position and dropped back. J.ne other pair finished together some lengths m front in fair time:
Warstep was on the track looking rery bright. She is one of tho few that thrive on plenty of racing. Wisebird. carrying a solid weight, was jumped off at the five-furlong post from ft dead stand. Ridden right out, S Jill h - ed^, 6r , eall °P strai g ht "id well. This filly has not had a raoo smce last Easter owing to an injured leg. She «>ould always gallop vory last, and all going well is sure to win races this autumn.
Bee was not asked to do her best when spruiting four furlongs. It is not known whether she will go to Welling-
Battle Eve and Adjutant spurted half a- mile, both of them under a pull, and moved well.
Bokktroke and Samisen galloped four furlongs together. Boldstroke had the worst of the weights, and though she could not pace it with her companion over the two first, furlongs, she was in front and doing the best work • when the post was reached. The time was rather good.
Hobday struck herself on tho suspensory ligament of her off foreleg a day or so ago, and her leg has filled Oadly. _ She was being led about with the injured limb heavily bandaged. Merry Guest, who only started work again a few days ago, gave the tendons of her off foreleg a bad strain while playing in the naddook yesterday. The leg is badly filled.
Gnome, Briar Pateh, and Glee were given a solid six furlongs. Glee got badly left, and could never get on terms. She was moving short. Briar Patch was going_ slightly better than Gnome at the finish, but there was very little in it, and she had the advantage in weights.
_ Quarantine, who was blistered a short time ago, was on the track attain. His fetlock joint still bears an enlarged appearance, and he is rather careful of it. During his enforced -spell he has got rather portlv. He will not he paid up' for in the Wellington Cup.
Encore has developed a nasty splint just b'elow his knee.
_ Peg and Honesty wore companions m a stronglv-run mile. The pace was not too solid over th 6 fimt half, but afterwards the pace was better, and both marns were doing their best. At the finish, without being ridden out, there was nothing between them,' Scoteh Melody was given a mile on the grass at something a shade better than three-quarter pace. She is very well, and can always be depended on to run a good race tinder a light weight. W. Soobie has heen engaged to do Mr. D. Rutherford's riding.
