PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL
P-: — - A meeting of the Petone Borough Council was held last evening,' there being present the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan), and Councillors Forsyth, List, Cox, Brocklebank, Anderson, Jones, Tnteman, and Finlay. An application for a shed, in the Municipal Boat Shed, was granted F. J. Hale provided one is available. R. Hancock was grafted a renewal of a bil-' Hard-room license, subject to the usual conditions.
[ The engineer was instructed to inspect certain swing boats offered for sale to the council. Messrs. Finloy, Dalziel and Sim advised that they had written to_ the solicitors for the Hutt Park Railway Co., and the Gear Meat Co., and in both cases the respective solicitors have refused' to admit the council's claim in respect to the railway line, end have notified their willingness to accept service of any proceedings the council may commence'. It was inuimated that authority to sue had been given. The Town Clerk, Wellington, stated that the Sinking Fund Commissioners must adhere to the charge of £15 155., legal costs in connection with tho loan of £5000,-which is below legal charges. .The Hoalth Inspector reported two cases of chioken-pox in the borough. A reply was. received from the Labour Department to the effect that the early-closing petition signed by H. C. Collett and others does not represent a majority of house furnishers carrying on business in Petone. With regard to the petition signed by C. Barlow and others, it was stated that the requisition was not in order, not being in the form prescribed. Mr. R. W. Short, representing the Hutt Valley Trotting Club, waited on' the council in respect to certain alterations to tho totalisator house at the Petone Recreation Ground. Mr. Short asked for permission to allow the club to erect o temporary addition to the building in question, which .the council decided to grant.
Councillor Brocklebank drew attention to the fact that the windows of the pumping station at the west end were broken, and on th© motion of the Mayor it was decided that tho Police Department he informed that the property of the borough was being wilfullv destroyed, and to suggest thot a different _ system of patrolling tho town be instituted, or that an extra policeman be provided. Councillor List suggested that if tho polico visited tho foreshore the evil of "boach-loitoring" near the ladies' dressing-room would be minimised if' not dono away with.
