GERMAN BATTLE-CRUISER REPORTED SUNK
A SENSATIONAL RUMOUR BRITISH CRUISER FIGHTS THE VON DER TANN (Rec. January 11, 11,30 p.mi) _~.,., ~«,,„ . London, January 11. Ihe latest Indepenc@it Cable Service message from Vancouver says that the_ Buenos Ayres newspaper "La Prenza" has published a report that a British cruiser has engaged and sunk the German battle-cruiser Von der Tann, carrying a crew of nine hundred. Another report gives a widlely distant location, and aVds that the Gcrernment has received a wireless message stating that the British cruiser is afloat and believed to be undamaged. The German battle-cruiser Von der Tann was reported some time ago to have escaped into the Atlantic, but the story was not confirmed. If theabove message should prove.to be true, then the Germans have lost one of their most formidable fighting ships. The Von de r Tann was completed in 1911. She displaces 18,700 tons, and carries a complement of 910 all told. She cost £1,833,000, steams 27.6 knots, and carries eight 11-inch, ten 5.9-inch and 1 sixteen 3.4-inch guns. '
