PUBLIC OPINION AND THE WAR
BRITAIN'S SPLENDID SPIRIT New York, January 10. Mr. J. H. Choate, a former United States Ambassador to Great Britain,-in, a speech said that Britain was determined never to submit or yield, never to make peace until the devil of mili- v tarism was so vanquished that it would never trouble the earth again. The British courage, spirit, and hope were, magnificent. There was nothing grander '. than the attitude of their wives and daughters towards the war. CENSURE OF CERMAN SOCIALISTS. BLAMED FOR INDIFFERENCE. ; London, January io. I M. Vandervelde, addressing a ting of British Socialists, blamed.the German Socialists for their almost entire indifference at the cruel crushing of Belgium and at the horrible offences perpetrated. The Belgians were fighV mg for freedom and honour. NOT THE LAST WAR. LONDON "TTMES'S". OPINION. .''J . London, January 10. :, The "Times," in a leading article, says: "It is unlikely that this war will be the last war. It is not even: likely that a long reign of peace will follow, during which human relations can make a permanent advance, unless there is a definite constructive ef- ■' fort to secure this. There is a danger of using optimism as a crutch instead of a spur. We aro letting slip opportune ities by which alone our hopes, and ideals may be realised. Let us take theiv trouble to discover what elements off German kultur are sound and needed asj contributions to our common Europeanlife."-
