The Hon. J. Allen left for the south last night. He will make Dunedin his headquarters for some weeks, returning to Wellington probably about the end of the month.
The Hon. R. Heaton Rhodes left for Christchurch last night. Mr. Rhodes is Officer Commanding the Ist Regimont Mounted Rifles (C.Y.C.)., and he intends to be present at the staff-ride of the Canterbury Senior Officers, which is to take place at Waikari at the latter end of the week. o
The Right Hon. Andrew! Fisher and Mr. James Boyd, M.P., we* ? entertained,at luncheon yesterday _by the members of the Cabinet now in Welb'ngton. The' Mayor of Wellington (Mr. J. P. Luke) was also a guest at the luncheon. In the afternoon the Australian visitors were driven out to the eamp at Trentham. They were accompanied by the Prime Minister (the W. F. Massey), the Hon. J. ii, W>the Hon, iW. Fraser, and Colonel ..Robin. Mr. Fisher and Mr. Boyd lo'-, for Christchurch last night, and jontinue their tour of New Zealand.
In the paragraph in yesterday's issue relating to Mr. Keith Izard, wrong initials were inadvertently used for one of the names mentioned. It should have been stated that. Mr. Izard is the son of Mr. C. H. Izard,.of Wellington.
Among the passengers by the Niagara from Vancouver .yesterday were the Very Rev. Dean Regnault, the Very Rev". Dr. Kennedy, and the Rev. Dean Holley, who were proceeding to Belgium to attend the Roman Catholic Congress when the war broke outi The conference was held at Lyons, in France.
Mr. Edward Newman, M.P. for Eangitikei, is visiting Wellington.
Mr. A.- J. H. Bengej who las been Secretary to the Public Service Commissioners since they were appointed, has gone back to the Education Department as ohief clerk in the inspection branch. No appointment of a successor to Mr. Benge in the Commissioners' office has yet been made, but (Mr. P. Verschaffeit is acting in the meantime.
The resignation of Mr. F. M. B. ■Fisher as a member of the Executive has been accepted by tlie Governor. The Departments formerly 'administered by Mr. Fisher have been allotted as lows:—Electoral, the Prime Minister-; ' Customs and Marine, the Hon. A'. L. 'Herdman; Insurance, the Hon.tH._D. '■■ Bell; Printing Office and Legislative, ', the Hon. W. Fraser; Pensions, the Hon. E, H. Rhodes.
A large number of members of the ■police force assembled at the Lainbton Quay station last evening when a presentation was made to Chief Detective Broberg—or Sub-Inspector Brobere, as he now is—on the occasion of his departure for Dunedin, where he is to ' take up his new position. The presentation, which took' the form of a fine set of law books, was made by Superintendent Ellison on behalf- of t the police staff, and in, making the presentation the superintendent spoke in very, (high terms of the manner in which 'Mr. Broberg had carried out his duties ■; during, the period he had been stationed :ia this city. Inspector Hendrey also , spoke highly of the chief detective's ; ability and the care and skill with which lie had worked. On behalf of the detective' staff Detective-Sergeant M'llveney emphasised these remarks. Mr. Broberg suitably responded, remarking that though naturally pleased to get promotion ie was sorry to be leaving the many friends and' comrades he had in Wellington. Sub-Inspector Broberg trill leave for ithe south on Thursday; He : is being succeeded here, by ..Chief Detective Boddain. ■•-.-■
Mr.'H. Holland, Mayor of Christchurch, was a visitor to Wellington yesterday.- ;* He came from Christchurch at the invitation of the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) to attend a meeting of the Mayor's Patriotic Fund, Committee, at which some matters_ affecting the comfort of the troops in camp and those that will succeed them in which all four centres will be interested. A report of the meeting appears' elsewhere.
The many friends of Mr. Colin Campbell, of Clareville, will regret to hear that he has found it necessary to enter a private hospital to undergo an operation. . ,
Mr. and Mrs. W. Orr, of the Platform 'Farm, intend shortly paying a visit to the Old. Country.
The Rev. Father Tighe, of the Jesuit Order, is at'present conducting a retreat for the si6ters of St. Bride's Convent, Masterton.
The Rev. Father Holbrobk, Chancellor of the Diocese of Auckland, is on a short visit to the Very Rev. Dean M'Kenna, .V.G., Maßterton.
The death is reported of Mr. Thomas "Rankin, an old and well-known member of the Wanganui telegraph staff. . The deceased, who has been thirty-seven years in the service of the Post and Telegraph Department, had been sta- ■ tioned m Wanganui for about twenty years, and was one of the senior officers of the staff. He was a member jf the Wanganui Bowling Club, and was well known to bowlers all along the "yiast. • The Rev. Neville Barnett, at present curate of St. Paul's, Wellington, has teen appointed vicar of Patea. : The Eev. J. G. T Oastle, M.A., has been appointed vicar of' Island Bay. Mr. Fred Pirani, the 'Reform candidate for Wanganui at the Tecent election, has been the recipient of a pair of. gold sleeve links embossed with a monogram of his initials and a diamond •stud mounted in gold, from the mem- ■' bers of the Women's Branch of the Re- ; form League. In a letter from the prei sident (Mrs. D. G. Poison) and officers 'of the branch, the hope was expressed that the gift will remind the recipient of the respect and esteem in which they would always hold him. Mr. W. M'Ewen, the professional golf player, of Masterton, has received the appointment of coach to the 'Auckland Golf Club. \ Sub-Inspector Sheehan left for the south by the Wahine last night to take up his new position at Timaru. At the wharf a large number of his friends gathered to bid hip farewell. The sub- , inspector's place in the city will be filled by Sub-Inspector M'Kinnon. Senior-Sergeant Cassells leaves either "to-morrow or Thursday to take up his new position in Hamilton.
