BESIEGED BY WOLVES

During the German retreat from the Vistula packs of hungry wolves prowled round the vicinity of the trenches at night in dreadful quest of dead bodies, but in the day time they fled, terrified by the noise of the artillery. Occasionally, made bold by hunger, they pursued the living. A Russian soldier named Terestiev spent a horrible night with a German whom he had taken prisoner. Both were stragglers in the forest, and, not knowing the paths,'realised at nightfall that they had lost their way, so they settled down to sleep with their backs to a tree. Awakened ' by the crackling of twigs and dead leaves, they saw the eyes of a number of wolves shining green through tho darkness. The Russian gave the unarmed German his bayonet, and himself used his rifle as a club, as he had no cartridges. Terontiev vividly described the agony of bein" obliged to keep awake and on the alert when bi6 body was aching for rest and his eyes were heavy with sleep. Twice the wolves made rushes, which were beaten olr. Tho German was badly bitten on the hand, which the Russian, bound up kindly, with comforting words. At last daylight scared the wolves and allowed the men to discover the Russian lines, which wero only a mile away.
