MISSING SCIENTIFIC PARTY
TUTANEKATS SEARCH FOR THE ENDEAVOUR. The Government' steamer Tutanekai arrived in port yesterday morning from the Bluff, after having completed a thorough but unsuccessful search which extended' as far south as Campbell Island.. for the missing trawler Endeavour, which has an Australian scientificparty on board, bound from the Macquarrie Islands. The trip was practically unovontful, while the weather met with, though thick when the vessel was farthest south, was fair on tho whole. The vessel loft hero on Boxing Day, proceeding to' the Bluff. She arrived at The Snares from the Bluff on December 29. A boat was sent ashore, but the provisions depot on the islands was found intact, and not the slightest' sign of anything amiss was discovered. The vessel circled The Snares, experiencing strong winds and high seas. The Auckland Islands were observed at 8.40 a.m. the next. day. The inspection of the depots there showed everything in order. Tho islands wore left on December 31, but the vessel had to turn back in consequence of the bad weather. The vessel then went on to Disappointment Island, ono of the Auckland group, but could not land a party owing to tho bad weather, and pursued a course round tho island closo .in shore, tho whistle being sounded, but no sign of life was seen. Campbell Island was reached on January 2, and everything being in order tncre, tho vessel loft on January 3, pursuing a zigzag course to tho 'Bluif, which was reached an January 5. The only sign of life on the whole journey was tho plethora of sea lions observed on or near the islands visited.
