DEATH AT THE GAOL. , '• 'An inquest was opened at the Terrace: Gaol on Saturday by Mr. D. G. ( A.; Cooper, S.M., concerning the death of Daniel Murray, who had been remanded to that institution on Thursday last on a charge of having been found helplessly drunk, and who died there the fol- ■ lowing morning. Preliminary evidence was taken, and the inquiry was adjourned to 4 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon. The adjournment was made to' enable deceased's brother, who lives at Tolaga Bay, to be present. EXPIRES IN THE STREET. . Margaret Tointon, a newsvendor, expired suddenly in Willis Street at 4.30 p.m. on Saturday. Deceased was a widow, 56 years of age, and resided at 6 Evelyn Terrace. She had suffered with a weak heart for some years past, and death is beljeved to have been due to heart failure. An inquest will probably be held this, afternoon. YOUTH DROWNED. ' (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Invercarglll, January 10., William Lewis Giffen, '18 years of age, was drowned on Saturday afternoon whilst bathing in a gravel pit on the Surroy Park- Estate. Another lad named Eric Barclay attempted to rescue him, but failed, and' was pulled down by the deceased. .An inquest will bo held. • - HORSEMAN SERIOUSLY HURT. Cisborna, January 10. A serious accident is reported from Takapau. A man named Abbott, employed on the Takapau station, was rid. mg a horse behind a mob of sheep, when the horse slipped over, a steep face and rolled over several times with the rider still in the saddle. He was seriously injured infernally, and was conveyed to the Tokomaru Hospital. An operation was found imperative, and the district doctors for 50 miles round were mustered and the operation successfully performed.
