OFFICIAL WAR NEWS
TO HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR. .His Excellency the Governor lias received the following telegram, dated January, 8, from the Secretary of Stats tor the Colonies: — ' "Official News. —January 8: French apd Russian reports are satisfactory. "German , aeroplanes attempting tou approach Dunkirk were put to flight-) Violent German' attacks at various 1 points wore repulsed. • _ : "The Russian offensive continues in Bukowina." "January 9: The French Government reports progress at various points. ' A German redoubt has been carried north, of' Soissons. There lias been a stubborn infantry engagement near Bethany, .and , impdrtant results have been aohieved in the region round Thann and Altkirch. "The Russian Government reports increasingly fierce fighting on the northern bank oftho Vistula.; In Bukowina, Kimpolung has been occupied. In the Caucasus much booty has been captured, including the entire artillery of the 9tK Ottoman Army Corps." . PRIME MINISTER'S BUDGET. J The Prme Minister has received tha following message from the'-High Commissioner: — "London, January 8, 8.15 p.m. "Paris Teports .that oast of Stt. Georges the AJHgb have gained ground, I inflicting serious damage on the enemy's trenches at Steenstradte v ■ "In thei sector of Reims the' Allies have exploded a blockhouse and occupied fresh trenches two hundred metres in: advance of tlio lines. "From Jonchery-sur-Suippoto Souaifi the enemy's artillery waa silenced, the trenches were wrecked, and breastworks destroyed. "In tlio A'rgonne, west of Haute Ch'evachee, tlio enomy arrived and exploded the French first line of trenches, but a .violent attack immediately following was repulsed by tlio bayonot. Tlio French took prisoners and are maintaining the front. . "Tlio Allies' offensive continued m the region of Thann and'Atlkirch, with important results." London,. January 9, 4.45 a.m. ' 'Pars reports that north .of Soissons the Allies have carried a German redoubt, captured two lines'of trenches, and reached the third. The Germans on three occasions unsuccessfully attempted counter-attacks."
