PAHIATUA NOTES.
'Although, only three miles distant the rainfall at Mangatainoka varied for the year ended December 31, 1914, by 4.4 inches, the records for the period being: Pahiatua, 44.06 inches; Mar ngatainoka, 39.66 inches. Owing principally to the unsatisfactory and unsuitable condition of the Main Road between Pahiatua and Pongaroa, it has been decided to revert to coach and horses for the mail delivery from Pahiatua to Pongaroa. For some time past the journey between Makuri and Pongaroa has been accomplished by coach, the through motor service to Pongaroa only lasting for a short period last autumn. The maintenance of the latter road has always been a costly item for the Akitio County Council. Recently the council's overseer was instructed to prospect for suitable metal for repairing the road in the vicinity of Dillon's Bend, a noted portion of bad road during the winter period. At the meeting of the council this month, a report, submitted by the overseer, showed_ that a metal pit, in a fairly good position, had been' located and it was decided to call tenders for repairing- the road. There is a Government grant of £400 (£ for £ subsidy) on the estimates for the road between the top of the Puketot range and Pongaroa. The council hope to be able to repair the worst . parts of the road -with the money_ available. Last winter portions of this road wo/d almost impassable for a short period. It is. expected that the approaches to tho four bridges over the river between Pongaroa and the coast will be completed within a few days. The pastures- in the Pahiatua district still remain green. It is reported that farmers from other districts which are suffering from the effects of the dry weather, aro negotiating for grazing for their stock in this district.
