NOTES AND COMMENTS
rßr Glßnoob.l . Acceptances for the first day's handicaps and entries for the Trial Stakes at the Wellington Racing Club's Summer Meeting close on Wednesday next. , Owners- who intend being' represented at the Egmont and Taranaki meetings should not overlook the closing of nominations next week. The hurdle performer Hatana changed hands at Oamaru last week for 85 guineas. '. First Glanoe is said to have been purchased for 50 guineas in Ireland. She has proved a rare bargain to her owner. Good reports are to hand concerning the two-year-old Sicily (FormativeMiss St. Cecilia). The filly ran two good races at the Hawke's Bay Club's Bummer Meeting, and in the opinion of many she was unlucky not to so;r« on the second day. ; The Martian mare, Steinheil, a halfsister to Bon Ton, has so far failed to show any form in her races, though several times she has been well fancied by her trainer.. The mare always strips Well,, and her failures are difficult to account for. ■•■'■ ; : '-' '.;>..-.;:.■;■.••.:.■ ■■'■■:. ■■ •>' The imported mare Flower"" of the. West is in foal to Martian, and will bid adieu to the Turf very shortly. . The southern writer "Sentinel" haß the following:—"lt was a paddock rumour at Oamaru that one reversal of form at the meeting was due to the faot that a horse ran in ordinary shoes on the first day. The club should have sought information as to who 'plated' the horse on the first day, and that would have ended the question either one way or the other." So far Autumnus is keeping sound, and if he continues on the right way he will be brought to Trentham for tho Waterloo Stakes. The meeting bebetween him and Emperador should be one of the features of the first day's racing. ' A Sydney exchange says:. "During the past fortnight the representative of a prominent New Zealand stable has been trying to buy a fair horse in Sydney, but has-been unable to get anything of the class desired at a reasonable Even a possible slump in racing during the next year is unlikely to cause a market drop in the values of Australian horses possessing any chance of winning a race.. In New Zealand, too. prioes continue high for anything with pretensions to class." . -Keen judges have often expressed the opinion that Fabrikoff would not make a stayer. Apparency his new owner subscribes to this view, as the colt is only entered in the sprint events at the Trentham meeting. Since being passed in at the Auckland sales, an offer of 350 guineas has been received for, the Waikanae-bred half-brother by Bezonian to the O.J.C. Derby winner, Balboa. _ The offer wds not entertained, and it is probable that the colt will be sent to Sydney.for the Easter sales, along with' half a dozen other youngsters from the same stud; The rather appropriate name of Kukri has been chosen for a four-year-old by Ghoorka in the Porirua stables. In discussing the handicaps for the Wellington Cup on Thursday, the writer fell into an error in stating that Indigo, 7Bt. 181b., had received one pound less than weight-for-age. As a matter of faot, he has received two pounds more than weight-for-age, as he is a gelding, and is entitled to a 31b. allowance. Mr. Geo. Hunter's representative is at present a good fancy for the race, and his supporters will be pleased to know that accommodation has been hooked for him at Trentham. It is noticeable that there is a considerable falling-off all round in tho nominations at race meetings nowadays, and nearly all the club's which raced during tho holidays had a smaller total of entries than was the case last year, and tho, Wellington and Foxton Clubs have experienced a similar state of affairs. By winning the Manawatu Cup on Boxing Day, Kooya has now equalled the performance of Ghoorka, who won -five Cups. The Signalman mare's successes were gained in the Woodville, Dannevirke, Masterton, Hawke's Bay, and Manawatu Cups. Tn the Wellington Cup on January 20 she will only carry 31b. more than she won with at Awapuni.
