A Pariß communique mentions the brilliant recapture of trenches near Lille, and the capture of a portion of the enemies' first line, north-west of Plirey and the Woeuvre, and /the occupation of the woods westward of Altkirche. There were artillery aotions along the rest of the front. THE.PROCESS OF ATTRITION STEADILY; CARRIED ON. . London, January 7. ' ''Eye-witness" from headquarters reports that an officer and twenty-five men from the British Right and Centre, in attacking a trench on the evening of the 3rd, surprised the sentries and bayoneted twenty. Our casualties were thTeo. ■ The situation at New Year was as favourable as at any time since the outset. The British force has swelled into a great and steadily-increasing army inured to war, and able to look back on a record of hard fighting such as has been seldom experienced in the past. _ . The enemy's role is essentially a defensive one. The 'Allies steadily carry out the process of attrition, which'eventually will bring the war to an end. .VIOLENT GERMAN ATTACKS REPULSED. (Reo. January 8, 8.30 p.m.) Paris, January 8. Official;— Violent German attacks are reported in the region of Lassigny, In the Argonne, at the junction road from Four de Paris to Varennes, and the road from La Haute to Chevanebee, in the region of Verdun, and on the ridge commanding Steinbach. ill the attacks were repulsed. ■ / GERMANS FIRED 4000 SHELLS AT ST. GEORGES. (Rec. January 8, 11.30 p.m.) Paris, January 8. ' A French eye-witness says three hundred corpses were found in the ruins of St. Georges. We held the position though on December 30 the' Germans fired'4ooo shells, smashing up St. Georges. We blew up the forts occupied by 140 Germans in the YpTOB region. Seventy were buried, the others fled, but our artillery wiped them out. Our patrols found many flooded trenohes full of German corpses. STRUGGLE FOR CONTROL OF A ROADWAY. (Rec. January 9, 0.30 a.m.) 1 Paris, January 8. The struggle in the Argonne wages over the control of a roadway connecting the German positions round Vienne-le-Chateau, on the western outskirts of the Argonne forest, with Varonnes on the eastern fringe. The abandonment of this road was one of the worst mistakes committed by the German Crown Prince. Most of the fighting proceeds in the depth of the forest, where artillery is practically ineffective.
