A MAN WHO WANTED WORK AND WHO GOT IT The wanton destruction of £20 worth of glass in tho window of a grocer's shop in Featberston led to the appearance of John Patterson at the Magistrate's Court, before Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., yesterday. Patterson was charged with "committing mischief" by breaking the glass in question, the property of the Toogooa's Estate. Ho ilendrey explained^that accused had picked up some missiles from, the roadway and shattered the windows with them. The reason Patterson gave was that everyone was against him and he could -not. got work. Mr. Cooper: I think he will be successful in getting work. . Inspector Henarey oontinued .that accused had a long list of previous convictions for various offpnoes against his name. There were also 21 previous" convictions for drunkenness against him. The Magistrate fined the accused the cost of the damage done, £20, in default two months' gaol. AN UNLAWFUL HOUSE VISITOR. Alexander Joseph Moir, who was found in the bedroom of a house at 367 Willis Street shortly after midnight on Wednesday by an inmato of the house was charged with being a rogue and a • vagabond. Accused, who \ had been previously before the Court some months ago on a similar charge, and was then convicted and ordered to oome up for sentence when called upon, was sent to gaol for three months. ' 'A PITIABLE CASE. "It's hard to know what to do with him," said Inspector Hendrey in reference to the case of Charles Herbert Page, charged with helpless drunkenness. Aocused's sole trouble was drink, for which ho had been fined, prohibited, sent to gaol, committed to various institutions, and sent to Roto Roa Island, but all without - avail. The Magistrate oventually decided to send accused back t-o the last-named institution for a period of twelve months. OTHER, CASES. William Card, who was found helplessly drunk while driving a motor-car in Featherston a few days ago, was charged with being drunk while in charge of a vehicle. He was and ordered to pay 17s. 6d. medical expenses. A prohibition order was also taken out against him.. For drunkenness William Heaps, with several previous convictions against his name, was sentenced to one month s imprisonment. A prohibition order was also taken out against him.
