NEWS OF HONOUR READ IN ' HOSPITAL. Lance-Corporal Charles Alfred Jarvi6, of the 57th.Field Company, Royal Engineers, whose name was m the list of nine Victoria Cross heroes published recently, lies in . the Cambridge Ward at London Hospital, making a good recovery from an operation. The fact that a V.C. hero, was somewhere in tihat great block of buildings drew a crowd to the entrance at the visiting hour, including a number of small boys,.all anxious to get a glimpee of "Jarvis, the V.C. man." A representative of the "DailyMail" found him sitting up in bed smoking a cigarette, looking very well arid enjoying a chat with-a few of his relatives. ■ ■ He knew nothing about the honour until, he read his name in the morning paper. "It was one of the greatest surprises I've ever had," he said. "I haif never at any time expected it. So many great • things, had happened with our men that the affair under the canal bridge at Jenappes seemed quite small." ' . .The official description of that "affair" stated that Jarvis, who is a Scot, worked; "for 1} hours under heavy fire in full view of the enemy," and successfully fired charges for the demolition of a bridge. It was impossible to get a word of amplification from • him. ,Hiß relatives, however, say that ho was in as great danger from British as from German fire during -the whole time. His sister, bookkeeper at. a * West End restaurant, said: "His conduct was no more than we expected. He was always very daring. He had been mentioned twice in dispatches, and I think I expected he would get the, Victoria Cross 6ome day. We are all very proud of him."
