STEAMERS FOR OVERHAUL. A/t this time of the year it is. the usual custom for steamers employed in the New Zealand coastal trade to undergo overhaul and: survey. On Monday morning at Port Chalmers three steamers weje docked. They were the Poherua, Kovrhai, and Storm. The Flora is the next on the list for dockinff at the southern port. The Ngahere will be plaoed on tho Wellington Patent Blip to-day for overhaul, and t'he John and Awahou are about to vacate the cradle. At Auckland the cable steamer Iris is in dock,'and the Rakanoa vrtU. ako 1 dock at the northern port tliis week for survey. The Anchor Line's steamer Alexander wjJJ leave Wellington to-morrow, for Nelson, where she will undergo her' annual inspec* ition. Tho Westport. Coal . Companys , Canopus has just completed overhaul at Lyttelton. BOUND FOR,SAN FRANCISOO. Bound for San Francisco,.' via island I>orts, the Union Company's R.M.S. Mamma arrived at Wellington- from Sydney at 7 p m. yesterday. Pratique having been granted, by the Port Health Ofllcer,,.the vessel berthed at the King's Wharf at 8 p.m. The Marama left .'the .New . South Wales port at 12.45 p.m. on Saturday last, and for the -first two days out experienced very Tough weather. It- was, during this time that damage was done to tho starboard bulwarks. On January 3 the weather moderated somewhat, and strong winds and following seas were experienced till arrival. The. Marama will leave Wellington for • RaTotonga, Papeete, and San Francisco at 5 p.m. to-day, being due at her destination on January 27. , DELPHIC IN ROUGH WEATHER. A day late the White ,Star liner Delphio arrived in the stream at Wellington .from London, via Hobart, at 2.45 p.m. yesterday, and berthed at tho Queen's Wharf, No. 1 South, at 4.20 p.m. The Delphic has come out in place of the Athenic, and left London on'Novembor 14. The long journey was uneventful, with the 'exception that the ' vessel experienced particularly bad weather I in the Tasman Sea while crossing from ' Hobart. She cleared the latter port on 1 New Year's morning, and immediately ran 1 into a heavy 6outh-wesV gale- and sea. As 'the Dolphic progressed the weather became worse, and the. big ship was much, hui- ' feted. On Saturday the wind hauled round : to the north-east; and the sea increased. 1 On nearing the Now Zacl&nd coast conaiI lions moderated, but a gale blowing as she passed through Cook &trartt. The ' Delphic did not call at Cape Top. ■ Captain Symon is in-charge, and Mr. Evans is chief officer, Mr. Stevens .firat 1 officer, and Mr. J? H. .Doiighty. second. The Delphic brought ; a toge general ; C^rgo - for Wellington, and .Lyttelton. hne is expected to got' away for the southern port on Sunday next, and on completion of disoharge will commence loading for Home. Her other ports of, call will be Dunedin, Napier, Gisborne, Whangorei, ana Auckland. Tho vessel is due at the lastmentioned poTt on January 28, and wiU leave there for Wellington on January 29, arriving heTe on Snnday, January 31. !/&• parture will be taken from this port for ■London on February 4. i " , t MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Captain A. Dowell, of the Stormbird. has heen'granted holiday leave. Captain J. Crotty. mate of the vessel, ia acting-master, while Mj. E. .Grono has joined the Stormbird as mate. ' Mr. P. Maason, mate of the. Opawa. hM come aeliore, and Mr. W. Eeid has illled the vacanoy.' Sir. J. Milne has .joined the Wahine as seventh engineer,, in. riaeo at Mr. ' G. Swadel. . Mr. S. Hallyday, wireless operator on the Yr'aliino, has come .ashore, and Mr. D. Lane.:has joined tho vessel in o.: similar capacity. . Mr. J. H. Doughty, second officer of the Delphio, is making his first visit to Wellington after an absence of 14 years. Tho last time Mr. Doughty came into port was on fl, sailing ship. For some years he has been trading in White Star liners to Aus tralia and across the Atlantic. JACKSON HEAD BEACON RELIT. Tho Marine Department advise that Jackson Head beacon, which ba<i been out for some time, has been relit and was working on Tuesday night. It is announced that the Union steamer Kowhai will leave Dunedin to-day for the Bluff, to load for Wellington.' Information .has been received by the "Preßs" 6tating that while at Akaroa-'on Saturday tho steamer Cygnet sprang a leak. Temporary repairs were effected, and the vessel returned to Lyttelton. ■ It is understood that the. trouble was oaused through e defect under the belting, which was not noticed when she was recently overhauled on the Slip. Levin and Co.'s steamer Wakatu has made an intermediate trip .between Kalhoura and Lyttelton, and will not arrive hero till to-morrow. ' She will sail for the southern, ports on Saturday. We have good reason for believing, says tho "Star," that the Warrimoo will be requisitioned by tho Government as a troopship to carry the reinforcements of the Expeditionary Force from New Zealand, and also that the troopship. Hawke'e Bay on her return to New Zealand will go into dock at Port Chalmers. /The Maunganui, Tahiti, and Wa.itemata will also act as troopships for the Reinforcements. Having completed discharge of the Melbourne portion of her cargo of New Zealand timber, tho Kaiapoi is now unloading tho. balance at Sydney. . . The Union Company's big collier Wotruna will load at Newoastlo this week for Lyttelton. . Captain liollons, of the Government steamer Hinemoa, has advised the Marine Department .that he expected to leavo Hoiianga for Kaipara at noon to-day. The Hinemoa will overhaul .the buoys and lights at Kaipara .to-morrow, and will visit Onebunga, on Saturday. She is duo back at Wellington about Tuosday next. In view of the decline in traffic this year, owing to special circum'stonccs, it had boon decided to withdraw tho Takapuna from the Gisborno-Napier ferry service. She will leave Gisborne on hor last trip on Friday, and proceed from Napier to Wellington. Experience has 6hown that tho ordinary roadstead steamers will satisfactorily copo with the traffic, as tho'numbers carried by tho Takapuna, even -m tho hoight of tho holiday season, have, not been suoh as to warrant any further oontinuanco of the ferry scrvicc. Due in port this afternoon, the Connna will bo dispatchcd for Nelson and New Plymouth to-morrow. The Pohorua has been delayed in the so\ith and sho will not leave Wellington for Now Plymouth and West Coast ports till Wednesday next. As the Paloona did not dear Lyttelton for Wellington till midnight, last night, ■jho will not arrive in port till about 2 d m to-day. Somo 214 tons of cargo mil bo iandod' hero before the vossol proceeds on to northern ports. On account of cargo, not coming forward auicJsl? eaouchi the 1, &n4.S, Uiwo Buto*
shire will not leave Wellington for Avon, mouth till to-morrow. Inferior coal and heavy fog, delayed tho ferry steamer Maori on her ran from Wellington to Lyttelton on Tuesday night. .In consequence the.vessel missed conneoting with the first' express for the south yesterday morning. Loading operations on board the Shaw So.vill liner Kia Ora are expected to be completed in time for the vessel to leave Wellington for London either this evening or early to-morrow morning. ; . , The local agents for the 0. and D. Line (Messrs.* Bannatyne said Co.) anilounto that the liner Indrapura will arrive at Wellington from Lyttelton on January 16. She will sail for London on January 20.
