MASTERTON NOTES
(From Our Own Oorr«ssond«it.; A Masterton resident has received a copy of the "Cape Times," ill which it is stated that Captain F. B. Knyvett, of the Natal Light Horse, and formerly of Auckland, was wounded on November 18 in a fight with the rebels rear tbie Orange River. Three rinks of Napier-howlers paid-a visit to Masterton on Tuesday, and played [friendly games on the local Club's green. , ; ' ' Seventeen motor-cars and 14 motorcycles have been registered iri Masterton during the< last three months. ' ' It has now been definitely decided that a camp of the 17th Ruahine Regiment shall be held on the Opaki racecourse, near Masterton, about the end of March.
The schedules for the nest Masterton A. and P. Show, to be held on February 16 and 17 have been issued. During the recent excursion period, 3646 passenger tickets, were issued at the Masterton railway station. The railway service in the Wairarapa is very busy, just now with the transport of sheep, frozen mutton, and wool, and numerous special freight trains are being run. , Fourteen building permits, of a value of £2946, have been issued in Masterton during the past quarter, compared with seven, of a value of £1080, for the same quarter in 1913 . _ The Bideford Sports Club has decided to abandon its annual sports gathering, and to donate £20 to the Belgian Fund. The Masterton water extension scheme is being considerably delayed, owing to the non-arrival of collars forthe 18-inch pipes. The work of laying the pipes from the intake to the reservoir had been commenced, but has been temporarily held up owing to the lionarrival of the collars. . . Sixty-six civil cases were heard in the Magistrate's Court at Masterton during the. quarter ending December 31. The amount sued for was £1464 17s. 3d., and the amount recovered illMi 12s. 6d. . . c The vital statistics for Masterton for the year 1914 were as follow: —Births, 260; marriages, 78; deaths, 64. There wero ten convictions for drunkenness in Masterton during the month of December. This is the largest number of convictions for any month during the year. •
