The Prime Minister,has received the following message from the High Commissioner:— .

■ ; _ London, January 5, 5.55 a.m. . Paris reports that in Alsace the entire village of Steinbaoh was captured. The. Germans' works west of Cernay were taken and lost after ■ a violent counter-attack, but the Germans were unable to hold the position, which remains in the hands' of 'the Allies. Petroerad reports i desperate ; fighting in. the Bolimoff region: where the Germans made a vigorous attack and captured a_ trench, but they were immediately dislodged leaving a number of prisoners and guns. Fresh progress has been made by the Russians in Western Galicia and more than a thousand Austrian prisoners were taken. In the action in the Ujok Pass a whole Austrian battalion and the general and staff of a hostile column was captured. On the extreme wing the.'
