FIERCE BATTLE IN POLAND
HEAVY GERMAN LOSSES ' ■ .' RUSSIANS ' CAPTURE AN ■ AUSTRIAN GENERAL BRITISH NAVAL STRATEGY EULOGISED BY AN EXPERT ENGLAND IS STILL MISTRESS - ' ,OF THE SEAS
To-day it is reported that the Germans are reinforcing their armies- '..' in Poland with a view to making another attempt to reach Warsaw. Meantime the Russians, holding their.line in Central Poland, are press- '■ ing'forward vigorously in Western Galicia, anc| also along the Carpa- : thians. Their extreme Left now extends .right through Bukovina, al- . most to the Rumanian frontier, so that they appear to have forced -~, the Austrians into the Carpathians or through tlwpasses, all along the southern frontier of Galicia to within about thirty miles■ of Cracow. A message from the "Daily Mail" correspondent at Petrograd states that. ;" one Austrian army is being pursued by the Russians -south, of the Carpathians, and that further Russian forces aro preparing to enter Sungary from Bukovina. On the Western front the French have captured* Steinbach, in Southern Alsace, and the Germans admit the fact. Prc- .' gress has also been made by the Al lies in the Argonne, but along the . greater part of the Western line > heavy fighting with little change of .. position appears to remain the rule. Turkey is reported to have de- .;'- finitely abandoned the idea of invading Egypt, and the Ottoman tToops .in Syria have been recalled to positions along the Asiatio side of the ; Straits, south, afcd west of Constantinople. It is stated that a panio • ■■'" exists in ConstantinopK and that the! Sultan and Porte contemplate ' removing to Asiatic Turkey. Messages regarding the position' in Trans-Caucasia are somewhat obscure, but the Russians admit that the '■ ', German leadership,' are fighting well. '' ' 'A»very, troubled situation exists in Albania, and Italian warships hive had to assist in , . defending, the.capital, Durazzo, agamst an attack by. insurgents. Writhing to the "New York Independent," Mr. Roosevelt has vigorously de- \ riounced America's failure to carry out its obligations under The Hague Convention, stigmatising the foreign' policy of the Democratic Administration as cowardly and' contemptible. The subject of conscrip-: ' , tion is again under discussion in Great Britain, "The Times" inviting its consideration as a possibly necessary alternative to the volunteer system. It is reported:,from South Africa that the'burghers are readily ■ ■ responding to the call to join their commandoes for service' against German South-West'.Africa. The German Government is forming a co-operative company, with a large capital, to control the sale of bread■stuffs. v ; -
