Arthur Dewdnoy, formerly minister of the Baptist Church, Brooklyn,; Wellington, who settled in the United States two or three years ago. The deceased gentleman was well known throughout New Zealand as an-able and forcefulpreacher, but he was probably more widely known for the prominent part ho took _in the cause'of No-License, to which he rendered exceptional service in all parts of New Zealand, being recognised as one of the most fearless and convincing speakers in the ranks of the No-License Party. He leaves a widow and two sons. Mr. Stanley Harcourt, son of Mr. J. B. Harcourt, is at present in a private hospital, where he has been operated upon for an-internal trouble. Mr. Taylor, late of Swansea, Wales, who has been 1 appointed manager of the fitting department of- the Wellington Gas Company, vice Mr. C. B. Norwood, has arrived from Home, and has already entered upon his now duties. Chief-Deteotive Broberg, who has been appointed, sub-inspector, at Ihinedin, is at present on holiday leave prior to taking up his new duties. _ Mr. Alexander Simpson, Official Assignee for the Wellington district, died at his residence in Devon Street at' 2 o'clock yesterday morning. Some months ago, while on a visit ; to Palmerston 'North, Mr. Simpson was taken ill and v had to return to Wellington, where it was found that he had had a paralytic stroke/ After a'while he recovered sufficiently <to be able to visit his ■ sister, v Mrs._ -Lyall, at Nelson", and benefited considerably by'the change. Last month <i ho returned to Wellington. He had a 'second stroke on Saturday last," and buccumbed yesterday morning. . Mr. Simpson was born in Scotland 64 years ago, and on his arrival in New Zealand entered the service of the Union Bank in Christchurch. In 1877. he joined the. service of the National Bank, arid, was accountant at' Reef ton. Later he'was transferred to Grcymouth. Subsequently he' was in business as an auctioneer in Hawera and Rangitikei, and in 189 D entered tho Audit Department, whence, two years, later,: he was transferred to the Defence ■ Department. In July, •1903, he'was appointed to the staff of, the Official Assignee at Wellington, and . on the retirement of the late Mr. James lAshcroft, in.. 1908, he was appointed .Official Assignee for the Wellington district, which position he held up to the time of his death. He leaves a widow and three., daughters, one of whom is the •:■• wife of-"Mr.- Thornton, of the firm of Ross and Glendining. The funeral will take place to-morrow morning. * . Mr. Geo.
