A NEW ZEALAND CLERGYMAN AT THE FRONT
THRILLING INCIDENT. An interesting and, in parts, thrilling letter , has been received by the Rov. W. J. Conybeare, Rector of Newington, from ono of his curates now at the front. , The Rev. Cuthbert T. Maclean, of New : Zealand, became a curat© of St. Mary's, Newington, but on tho outbreak; of tho war he volunteered for service, and received a commission in the British Army. _ Writing from France as lately as November 3, Lieutenant Maclean mentions, almost casually, that he had been in tTenchcs continually under fire for three weeks, and had not had even a rough wash or taken off his boots. He has had several wonderful escapes from death, oven being hit in the neck, without, however, sustaining any injury. He then giveß this remarkable experience:—"Four days ago I spent some hours sitting in my 'funk-hole' in a trench, and then I left for a little exercise. About twenty minutes after I had moved out a huge shell .burst in the exact spot whore I had been sitting for hours and blew up .the trench for some twenty yards!"— "The Guardian."
