The Plunket Shield match between the representatives of Canterbury and Auckland .was commenced here to-day in perfect weather. Auckland won the toss, and Sale decided to bat. The first innings 'opened .disastrously, L.' G. Hemus being bowled with the first ball of the, match. Auckland's innings realised 212, the beat contributions being F. R. Mason's 81 and C. Dacre's 37. Carlton was the most successful Canterbury bowler. Canterbury's start was little better than Auckland's, Woods being bowled with the third ball of the innings. Canterbury has lost nine wiokets for. 196 runs (Hickmott 63), the last-wicket partnership between Thomas and Boxshall having added' so far 33 runs to the total.- Sneddon was the most successful Auckland bowler.
