dear light is'thrown to-day upon the progress of the Eastern campaign. An official statement by the Russians shows that, they have completely broken the German advance upon Warsaw, which was intended to engage the Russians in that quarter and delay their advance upon Cracow in the south, and are in a position to proceed .vigorously with this latter movement; 'A Berlin official message admits that the Russian extreme left? (in .Galieia) is "proving superior.'* Further details are'given of the dreadful state of demoralisation. to which the Austrian forces have been reduced. Heavy fighting is reported'at many points on. the Western, line, the Allies everywhere holding .their ground, and in some places making a slight advance. On the coast of Flanders, east of Nieuport, a determined effort is being made to smash the German defence, the guns of the Fleet being again called into play to supplement efforts of the Allied forces on land.' 'A, sensational incident . is reported from BrokenHiU, inNew South Wales,' where a small party of Turks fired with rifles' upon a picnic train, ' killing and wounding a number of people. The Turks were quickly hunted down, one being killed and the others captured. The South African Government has decided to enforce the compulsory service clauses of the Defence Act in order to prosecute a vigorous campaign, against German South-West Africa. .Union troops' have reoccupied Walfisch Bay, a British station on the coast-line of the .German colony. Flight Commander Hewlett, a naval •eviator who was'reported missing after the recent raid on" Cuxhaven, has been picked up by a trawler in the North Sea, and safely landed. The distinguished Service medal has been conferred v.poh the whole of the members of the orew of the British Submarine 811, which recently penetrated the minefields of the Dardanelles and sank a Turkish battleship. 'A correspondent of the Rome "Tribuna" states that perfect calf reigns 'in. Egypt and the Soudan, and .that the country iB safe from invasion from any side. Further ; interesting details are given regarding the' American. Note on neutral trading. It was conveyed to the British Government with a covering assurance from <the 'American Ambassador (Mr. Page) that President Wilson was animated by the friendliest spirit towards Britain, and it is stated that the British reply; will bs framed in} an equally friendly spirit.
