RIFLE SHOOTING

WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION

OPENING DAY

A "GROUP" MEETING

I The Wellington Rifle Association open- ! Ed its annual meeting at Trentham yesterday in excellent weather. The conI ditions in the City wero most deceptive ' as to those ruling at Trontham, for by the time the competitors arrived at the range about 8 a.m., the weather was fino, a light breeze was blowing, while the sun gave promise of making an appearance inside, an hour or two. Altogether the weather conditions were such as were very fair for shooting. • At 9 o'clock the first, the 300 yards match, was commenced. About 11 a.m; the sun camo out, and for some hours .shone out strongly. Then unfortunately .the wind developed, and blew _ in the , typical Trentham gusty fashion. Altogether 140 riflemen competed, an increase of 10 over the number of entrios for the previous year. Prize money totalling £235 was competed' for. The entries for the cadet matches were rather disappointing. In the 300 yards match, 46's and 47'b were fairly common. The late-comers in the same match were not so fortunate in regard to conditions, and where their predecessors made ccmmon 46's and 47'b the highest score was for them 42. For the teams' match 14.teams entered, it being a five-man seven event at 300, 500. and 600 yards. The match was commenced late in the afternoon, and will be continued to-day. The longer range matches will also be fired to-day.

Major Halpin was in char?e > on the range, and was assisted, by Major Marshall and Messrs. .T. G. Newton and W. Randall. Lieut.. Cotter was in charge at the trenches. Mr..W. G'. Fellingham was .a most efficient secretary, and Mr. E. E. Mortimer was his assistant.
