Dawson, alias Watson, wlio is at present undergoing sentence in" ■ gaol, was charged..with committing an aggravated assault on. Lilian Walsh. A - .'witness characterised, the assault as a partlcularlv brutal one.. Accused had knocked tho' woman down and further assaulted her while she was lying on the ground, and'as a result she had badly out her, hand on some broken , bottles lying on the road "at the time. ' " The Magistrate fined accused £5, with ■ the' alternative of' two : months' gaol, .•' the sentence to be cumulative to the one he'"is at present undergoing. "A CASE FOR PITY." . Edith Conway, a young woman, appeaVed on, remand -cuar'ged with being an idle and disorderly person in that she had insufficient lawful means of support. A/witness characterised her case aa being one which deserved pity, rather, than punishment. ' Inspector Hendrey * said she had been previously in gaol for vagrancy. The Magistrate ordered her to be sent to the Salvation Army Home * for twelve months. ALLEGED THEFT.. . Albert Wm. Foote was committed to the Supreme Court for trial on a charge "that being the servant of Albert It. Durant he stole £9 from him." On a further charge of having on January 23,' 1912, stolen. £4 from , George Gunn at Napier, Foote .was- remanded to' appear at Napier. Bail wa„ allowed in £3(). Mr. V. B. Meredith appeared for accused. • . OTHER CASES. Joliia Davie appeared on remand charged: with being found wearing a Uniform- of the military, force when he v was . not a member of. the same. He was . handed ov3r to tlie military' authorities to be dealt with. _• ' ' Two young men, David Wishart and ' . William Moulton, who were discovered having a stand-up fight in the public 'street, were each fined 205., in defaul!, three days in gaol, on charges of usiug threatening behaviour. Kathleen Von Cant was again remanded for a week on charges of drunkenness and wilfully .damaging a window, a3 she is still, an inmate of the Hos- '■ pital. May Sidon, an old offender, was sent to gaol fornix months on a of ' . being'a ; rogue and a vagabond. She was fined: £3, in default one month's imprisonment, for using ' obscene laiiguage; Both sentences are to be concurrent. ■ ' ■ Stella Taylor and Mary Stent were each remanded to January 6 on charges "of 'being rogues and vagabonds. Isabella Foster was remaridedHo tho same date on two charges of being an idle and disorderly person. . , For committing a breach-of his prohibition order, George Hume .was fined 205., in default three days'; gaol. ■ Richard Connery was. remanded for curative treatment on a charge of be-, ing found helplessly drunk. John Pryse and Mary M'Mantis, two old-offenders for drunkenness, were each •..sent-to gaol for a month. Tho latter is a prohibited person. . Bessie Taylor, also prohibited, was fine- 1 205.. with the alternative of three days in gaol., Simi- - larjy charged, George Francis '.was. fined . ' 10s., in default 48 hours' imprisonment.
