Gurkhas were occupying a long trench facing a German trench which ■ran at a -slight .angle to it, about 200 yards.or 300 yards away. •• ■'' By the light of.tho moon above the low-lying mist the : Germans and' the Gurkhas kept up a running fusillade. Not far from the .trenches and running towards that of the Germans was a slender, line of undergrowth. Here a couple of Germans were in ' cover —a sort of outpost where two picked shots sniped with unpleasant precision; towards the moon two long clouds came up—and the Gurkhas took their chance. A few men were left in their trench to'keep up the firing and to quiet German suspicions. The rest wriggled out softly on their stomachs towards the low undorgfowth. .There the two snipers met a quiet and sudden end while the first cloud,was veiling the moon. When it' had passed shots still came from their shelter, though, to be sure, the bullete did not travel far towards the British trench. And when the second cloud arrived and tho earth was dark for ten minutes ah avalanche of straining hard' muscle and sharp steel fell upon the Germans. Hard breathing, cut- and thrust and wrench, and a few desperate cries—that was all to tell the work of annihilation. About 150 Germans had learnt the lesson of the kukri, and all but three of the Gurkhas saw the dawn. ....
