Great sympathy is expressed by Petone citizens with Mr. John Byrne, of Cuba Street, in the sad death of his Bon Erie, aged eleven years, which occurred at East Takaka on Sunday, whilst the lad was on a holiday. Whilst out riding his horso bolted, and he was thrown into the river, his body being found in two feet of water. A boy was illustrating Morse signalling on the Petono beacn to his friends one evening recently, using an elcctrio spark lamp for the purpose. Suddenly a powerful searchlight illuminated tho foreshore, and a hasty rush for cover behind bontsheds, the sea-wall, etc., resulted. . _ ■ A shooting competition was held at the Petono District High School boys' camp at Rona Bay during tho holidays', the results being:—M.
