AUCKLAND RACING CLUB GOLDSIZE WINS SUMMER CUP. (By IWe/frosh.—Press Association.) Auckland, December 29. The Auckland Racing Club's Slimmer Meeting was continued at Ellerslie today in fine though dull weather. There was a large attendance, and the racing throughout was most interesting. Speculation on the itotalisator was again brisk, the sum of .£51,134 10s. being put through the machine, compared with -£-,5,002 10s. .for the corresponding day last year, an inorease of jfcßl32. During the afternoon the stewards held three. inquiries. M'Millan, the rider of Prince Soult in the Islington Plate, was fined .£lO for careless riding. L. Traill appeared before them for having, it was alleged, broken fin engagement to ride Beacon at Dunedin. . After hearing evidence the stewards decided to forward the papers, etc., to the Wanganui Club, who licensed the •jockey. J. Deerey complained that Mr. ,J. O'Meara, the owner - of Fashion Plate, had engaged him to . ride that horse in the Ponsonby Hurdle Race, and had later given M'Flinn the mount. The stewards ordered tho owner to pay Deerey a losing mount-fee. The results are:— - EOWBN HANDICAP, of 250 sovs. Six furlongs. 7 Mt. G. L. Stead's br. f. MANAWATU SUMMER MEETING
CONCLUDING DAY, . AWAHOU WINS BIG HANDICAP. (By Meffraph.—Special Correspondent.! Palmerston North, December 29. A large attendance and glorious weather favoured the Manawatu Racing Club for the concluding day of the Summer Meeting. Although the fields were small 'the racing was good, and somo fino foughtout finishes were witnessed. The sum of ,£23,210 was put through the machine, as compared with -£23,33:; on the corresponding day last year. The total handled for the meeting was ,£6-1,834, against ,£82,777 last year, Bhowing an increase of .£2057. A poor Idt contested the Whitmoro Hack Handicap. Janitor was the'only scratching, and the top-weight was made a good favourite, while more money was lost on Want. At the start' Soporific jumped off in front, and was not again headed. He was hard put to it at the finish to stall oil' Invader and Montana, but he held his position till the line was reached. Montana did not get too good a •run, and Want, when looking dangerous, stopped to nothing. There were seven Tunners m the Hurdles. The Rover was made a very hot order, with Sir Donald nest in demand. At the start Leapuld and Timothy took charge, but passing the judge's box the. fmJb time (the others closed up. Round the Itop The Rover and Sir Donald displaced tho leaders, and Flingot joined them in the run down the back. Over the last half-mile Flingot and Sir Donald were out by themselves, and after jumping the last fence Flingot ran on and easily settled Sir Donald. Leapuki waa a poor Ithird, and the favourite fourth. The. gallop was a very fast one. The withdrawal of Melodist left' only five runners in the Clandeboye Welter. Dispatch. Carrier, who was unlucky on the first, day, was best fancied, but heavy support was also .forthcoming for Master' Lupin. The two fought out a greail finish, but the honours rested with the favourite, who, had a neck to the good at , the finish. Matlow finished very fast and got third place just clear of Black Lupin, who bad made all tho running.
Awahou and Bertrada were evenly supported in the big handicap, attd in a lessor degree th« remainder were also evenly supported. At .the start Bertrada took away the tapes and collided with Stepney. The mare acted as pacemaker from Guiding Way go ; ngout of the straight, but at the six furlongs the others had closed up and the field was bunched all down the back. Awahou was galloping very nicely in the centre, and he took charge entering the straighit. Moutoa Girl then came fast on the rails, and',the favourite had to be hard ridden toinold his place. Bertrada was a fair third,, and then came Guiding Way. Papalitz was withdrawn from the Westbury Hack Handicap, for which Lady Black, who was making her first appearance at the meeting, was the best fancied, with Miraculous, Marimbi, and Gold Soult backed in that order. The favourite had every chance, but could not adt vnder her big weight. Martlet cied, with Miraculous, Marimba, and charge and then won nicely. Martlet had to*bedridden, out to stall off Shopherd's Bush, who finished very fast. The favourite was fourth.
With Gladiole's treatment of tho field in the Palmerston North Stakes on the previous day still fresh in their memories punters had no hesitation ■ in making her a strong order in /the Kawau Handicap, Zeus and Pavlova being the next best supponted. Tho race was practically a repetition of -the Stakes, Gladiole rushing to the front soon after tho start, leading her field all the way, and wining comfortably by a good length. Therfc was an exciting run for second placo between Peronilla, Pavlova, Lady Alicia, and Pariform, Lady Alicia gdtting the judge's verdict by half a head from Pavlova.. Peronilla was fourth and Painform' fifth.
Dispatch Carrier was the only, withdrawal from ' tlie Christmas Hack Welter, ten acceptors going to the past. When the field settled' into its stride Melodist was in front, with Janitor, and Tarigihou close up. Melodist was still in . front at the' homo turn, but at. the distance Ithe field; closed up, Jem ccming nj» 'iast on tho "outside. ■ At. the hall distance he bad'cut the opposition down and had no difficult}' in sooring by a 6c,uple of lengths from Janitor, with Melodist clo9e up third. Sir Fisher was fourth, and ithen came Tangihoa ami Namur.
The final event of the day, tho Farewell Handicap, attracted only three starters, Bertrada declining her engagement though Montana, who had contested the first race of the day, was saddled up again. Princess Moutoa was made the hottest favourite of the meeting, and she and Victoris raced on terras to the home turn, where she drew out and won easily by a length. Half a length separated second and third. The results are:— WHITMORE HACK HANDICAP,- of 110 sovs. One mile and a furlong. i Mr. J. K. Jackson's b. g.
