About 10.20 o'clock last night a prolonged and very loud noise,'as though from a big explosion, was heard from the direction of Karori. The prolonged noise was followed by a short, sharp report. It could not be ascertained last night what was the cause of the disturbance. The largest remount depot in Great Britain is now in the. course of construction at .Lathom Park, near Ormskirk, Lancashire, the residence of Earl Lathom, over 40Q men being engaged in the work. The cost of the depot will bo £60,000, and stables and men's quarters are being built to accomodate 5500 horses and 1800 grooms and roughriders.
