STUBBORN DEFENCE
UNDER SEVERE FIRE London, December 28. •"Eye-witness," describing tho fight on December 21, said the British made a gallant .and stubborn defence under severe fire from three sides. Finally they were ordered to retire as 'the position was precarious. The enemy's success was short-lived. ■ A French reinforcement from' a village stormed the trenches, which were retaken The fight lasted during the afternoon and all night in a perfect hurricane of rain and sleet.. The enemy's searchlights and flares lit up the dajkness. Friends and foes were at such close quarters that it was difficult to' distinguish the respective positions. ' The enemy's attack was spent by the 23rd. They lost heavily during the previous three days. 1 On the 24th both sides were contented with mortar and hand-gren-ade work.
