THE TURF
MANAWATU SUMMER MEETING
THE SEpOND DAY,
STAKES WON BY GLADIOLE,
(By TelcßTOph—Special CorreepondenU Palmerstqn North, December 28.
Favoured again with fine weather tho Riwing Club succeeded in attracting a lavgu crowd for tho second day of the simiinor meeting in keeping with tho oponinj day. liie racing was good, and »oiuo ylosjo finishes resuisted. Tno mouoy put through tho machine i'or the day amounted to its compared with •Kiij.ull for the corresponding day last yoar.
There was a good machine on the first ixjce, for whiah Orleans and Soporific were fancied in that order. The favourite duly won, but it was only by tho narrowest of margins from Melodist, with Janitor a neck away, and Soporific fourth. The early running was made by Soporific and Janitor, with Kaliuiuaugu next, and the favourite well back. Round the bottom bend Melodist ran to the front, and he and Janitor were fighting out the finish when Orleans got up on the rails and won by a bare head. Papador and Kukawai were withdrawn from the Hurdles. The first day's winner Waipunoa was again entrusted with most'support, but this time the difference in the weights enabled Leapuki to hold him'. There was very little in it at the finish. The winner, was in front throughout, but over the last fence Waipunoa and Plint'ot challenged unsuccessfully. Golden Water looked very big, and finished tailed off, as did Timothy. - Captain ilackay was. second favourite, but though he was prominent for a mile and a quarter he then fell back beaten. Shepherd's Bush, who ran a good race under adverse" circumstances op tho opening day, was a better favourite than Gold Soult in the" Highden Hack Handicap, but the pair finished.without the money. At the start Eamoanawhiri went out in front, .and Ararat and Shepherd's Bush with Gold Soult were next. Ararat joined Uamoanawhiri at the distance, and a great race homo resulted in favour of the Advance filly." Gold Soult was a fair third, and the favourite was next.
In the big Handicap Kilrain had the call, but Princess Hoiitoa, l?air Bosamoad, Ladoga, and Bertrada were all supported within a few pounds of each other. At the jump away Bertrada took charge from Purscfifler and Pavlova, with the others bunched. Down the back Princess Afoutba moved up but Bertrada led into the straight.' At the distance Pavlova got through on the rails, and Princess Moutpa challenged on the outside. A brilliant finish carried Pavlova in by a head, with Princess lloutoa a neck/away. Ladoga was fourth and Lady Alicia next. The winner has incurred a penalty for the Harton Cup. Backers sized the Palmerston North Stakes np as lying between Emporador and Eangitoro, while Gladiole was quite neglected on the machine. At the start the latter began with her old-time brilliancy, and rounded the turn well clear of Bmjjerador and Eangitero. She ran in a very easy winner by three lengths. Emperador did not finish with his customary dash, and though he stripped well he wns probably in want of a race. Eangitero was in second place going down the back, but he failed to maintain his position. The winner was successful ip tho same race two years ago. Jem, a maiden performer 'from the Porirua stables, succeeded in winning the Hack Welter after a very 1 close finish with Dispatch Carrier and : Ladogeur. The early running was made by Tangihou and Mystified, wjth Dispatch 'Carrier next. At the bottom of the straight Jem came up on the outside, and Dispatch Carrier got up on the rails.with Ladogeur on the inside. A ding-dong battle saw Jem get the verdict by a head, with Ladogeur aneck away. Tangihou was fourth. =Ora«sbv .lost his. = rider_at:.the start. ior tae Awapuni Goldstream and Demse Orme were evenly backed. The former began emartly, and stalling off several challengers phe held her own in the run home, and won nicely by a length. Peronilla was prominent to the turn, where she faded away, and Chakwana ran up to Denise Orme, but the . i*F, on - The best Master Aohilles could get waa a fair third. Zeus ana Goldstream both Tan badly". Sunbird scored the easiest win of the day in the Himitangi Welter. The favourite, Square Deal, got off badly, and then did not gallop his best at any part of the race. Steppey was prominent to the turn, where he faded away. Black Lupin rushed through in the straight, and- got second money, just clear of Panform. The results are as under:— KELVIN HACK HANDICAP, of 110 sovs. One mile and 55 yards. I Mr. S. W.
