PRINCE LOUIS OF BATTENBURG
GRANTED HALF PAY (Rec. December 28, 5.25 p.m.)' London, December 27. _ It is officially announced that, having regard to H.S.H. Princo Loiiis of Battenburg's exceptional services, ho has beoii granted.half-pay, of £2000 per annum.—"Times" and Sydney "Suii" Services. Vice-Admiral Prince Louis of Battenburg was naturalised a British subject and entered the Royal Navy as a naval cadet in 1868. He became sub-lieutenant in 1874; lieutenant, in 187G; commander, 1885; captain, 1891. Ho served in the Egyptian War of 1882; Director of Naval Intelligence, 1902-1304; RearAdmiral, 1904; Commanding Second Cniiser Squadron, 1904-6; Second in Command Mediterranean, 1906-8; Com-manclor-in-Chiof, Atlantic Fleet, 190810; Commanding Third and Fourth Divisions Home Fleet, 1911; Second
Sea Lord, of Admiralty, 1911; and subsequently became First Sea Lord. Ho resigned this position towards, the .aid of October) and in a letter i-n Mr. Churchill (First Lord of the Admiralty)' ho stated thnfc he was driven to the painful conclusion that his-birth rind parentage, were impairing ..in som6 respects his usefulness on tho "Board of tho Admiralty. wann tribute to Prince Louis's services. The present life-and-doath struggle was oxcitmg terrible racial passions/ and Princo Louis's decision showed tbe samo spirit_ as that with which his nephew, Prince Maurice, had given iip his life for England. Tlio Princo is a son of the late Prince Alexander of Hesso by a morganatic marriage. Ho married his cousin, Princess Victoria of Etesse, who is a graμddaughter of Queen Victoria. He has two sons in the Navy, one of them, Princo Georgo, being a sub-lieutenant on the Now Zealand. A nephew, Prince Maiirico of Battonberg, a lieutenant in the King's Royal Rifle Corps, was killed in action in Franco.
