New and Interesting light is thrown upon the naval battle off the Falkland Islands in descriptive accounts published to-day. Th'at the German sea-raidera were swiftly overwhelmed was already known, but the ■ narrative now supplied gives a vivid picture of the whole affair, and inoidentally discloses the faot that Admiral Sturdee'a squadron included two battle-cruisers. The fate of the Dresden, tie only surviving cruiser of Admiral von. Speo's oommand, is still uncertain. Another striking story is that of the terrific battle whioh. raged for days on the ■River JBzura, in Poland, thirty miles west of Warsaw. The Germans and Russians are entrenched in the, marshes 'on opposite sides of the river, and the Germans, in a long series of desperate attacks, endeav- . ouredtofdrd the river in face of tbe Russian fire; On one occasion they gained a footing on the eastern bank, but only to be swept back • into the , river a couple of houre later. The slaughter has been fearful, and the Germans appear to have been absolutely checked in their efforts , to reach.' Wareawi,.lt.is , stated that the ■Germans- admit' that their attacks on. the Bziifa have ceasedi The Russians claim that further Bouth, on' the Pilica, they have pierced the German line, and also report a minor but decisive-victory over the Austrians in the Carpathians. ;In Belgium, on the thirty-mile front ' from the sea to tho River Lys, operations have been interrupted by a dense fog, but appreciable progress is reported north of the Aisne, in the Lower Vosges, and in Upper Alsace. At a number of places the Allied artillery prevailed over that of the Germans, the German batteries in some ' cases being silenced. The futile air-raid on Dover has been followed by a more daring attempt, in which a German aeroplane contrived fo get as far as Erith, live miles from "Woolwich Arsenal. It was subjected to a lively fusillade from high-angle guns, and fled, closely pursued by British aeroplanes, from which it ultimately escaped in' th« fogi From New York comes a sensational story of a British naval ■ raid iipbn a German, bay on December 25. It is suggested, that the point of attaok may have been Cuxhav;en' (tho German naval harbour on the tilbe), but the etory, as it" stands, although it is allegedly based upon a Statement by the German Admiralty, is somewhat improbable. It is claimed by the Russians that they, have inflicted a heavy defeat upon the Turks in Asia Minor..
