NAPIER'S MARDI GRAS

The Napier Thirty Thousand Club's second Mardi Gras opened yesterday morning with a procession which was over a mile long. An immense crowd, estimated at 20,000, lined the .streets and occupied every 'vantage point on the buildings along the route. The displays in-the procession were of an excellent character, .some being prhaps the best ever eeen: in New Zealand.. The exhibits of the soft ■ goods trade and of the nalivea of Australia resident here were particularly.fine. -Tho^ Maori Queen's canoe was\a'6plendid , 'piece..-of work. Procession awards were received by. the Japanese tea kiosk (part of soft goods exhibit)', Napier Woollen Mills (Belgian .battery), Australian display ("The Commonwealth"), and Rollinson and Son ("Fibrou's plaeter"). Humorous: displays,' decorated motor-cars and cycles, and teams of American Indiane and cowboys were included in the pro--cession. At.Nelson Park the corofia : tion of the. queen, king, and Maori queen were interesting ceremonies. Numerous side-shows provided-amusement for the visitors. Several arena events were got off. The grounds were brightlv illuminated in the evening, and the first day. closed with a brilliant fire•works display.... ■' . , .' , .
