ALLEGEDGAMING HOUSES * RAIDED ■ OFFENDERS IN COURT As an outcome of Tuesday night's raid on alleged gaming-houses in mining Street bj Detective ;Cassells and other members of the Police, four Chinese and one European appeared before Mr: D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Kem Sing was charged with being the occupier of premises at 135 Taranaki Street, and using the same as a common gaminghouse, while Ah Yung was similarly charged in respect to premises at 39 Haining Street. •, Wong Loui and Ah Loo were each charged with being found in a common gaming-house. Mr. V. R. Meredith appeared for the four, and entered pleas of not guilty, asking for a remand to January 2, when he intimated ho would ask for another remand. "In the cases of the principals, bail was allowed in each case at £50, and in the lesser charges at £5. The European, Robert Macauley, charged with being found in a common gaming-house, pleaded guilty, and was fined 205., in default three days' imprisonment. A BAD CHARACTER. A very bad character was given to Charles William Dawson, charged, -with obstructing police constables in the execution of their duty. Inspector Hendrey explained that accused had objected to the arrest of a woman of the unfortunate class, and had attacked three constables with a closed knife. Accused himself lived on the earnings of the woman in question. "Beasts like you drag these unfortunate women down," said the Magistrate to accused, and fined him £2, with the alternative of a month in gaol. Later in the day Dawson again appeared in Court, and was charged with committing an aggravated assault on another woman, and with being a rogue and a vagabond, in that he had no visible means of support. The first charge was adjourned to December 30, and on the second accused was sentenced to a year's imprisonment. A SAD CASE. Clara ~'Algar, a married woman, appeared on remand charged with drunkenness. She had been twice previously convicted for drunkenness during tho past six months. She was remanded, so that inquiries might bo mado as to having ber commitotd to a receiving homo. "This is a remarkably talented woman in many ways, her only trouble being drink," said Inspector Hendroy "Her people wish to protect bor against herself, and ask that sho bo committed to some institution." . wilfully damaging a window, valued al. 205., tlio property of Mary Goper and Naga. The remand was made, as accused is still in tho Hospital. Patrick Campbell and George Keenan, two young men, were each fined 10s., in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment, for using threatening behaviour. For using obsceno language, Edward Mohan was fined 205., in default seven days' imprisonment. For importuning, Mary Hearne was fined £2, with the alternative of fourteen' days' imprisonment. Similarly charged,.Edith Firth was committed to the Salvation Army Receiving Home. John Miller was fined 10s., in default forty-eight hours 'imprisonment, for being drunk while in charge of a vehicle.
