An interesting presentation,. in thai form of a pastoral staff, will he made on Christmas Day to Dr. A. W. Averill,Anglican Bishop of Auckland, by the 'Maoris of the diocese, as a memento 08 the Mareden Centenary. The staff (says the "Star") will be in four parts, in-, eluding a carved crook at the top; the wood for the other three sections haa been presented hy three different Maori' tribes, and eaoh piece is of a different kind of New Zealand wood. The crook/' which was designed by the late Ven. Archdeacon Walsh, who was a recognised authority on Native habit 6 and! customs, as well as a brilliant scholar of the Maori language, was carved by,] Mr. J. H. Edwards, of Auckland. Thar staff will be presented to tho Bishop at Russell, when tho chiefs of the different tribes will meet Dr. Averill and! present eaoh portion separately. A private cable message received in Oamaru from London announces the death there of Mr. Alex. A. M'Master, of Tokarahi, who left on a :trip to Engv land in July for medical treatment. Mr. M'Master, who was 61 years of age, was born at Waiakura, Oamaru, ini 1863, and educated-at the famous Rugby, School and also on the Continent* After a few years of travelling and training in commercial pursuits he re-i turned to Oamaru to assist his father in the management of Tokarahi. Mr. M'Master was a keen racing enthusiast, and at one time kept a small stable of thoroughbreds, which included some very fair performers. He was the president of the North Otago Jockey Club, and for many years was an active member of its committee. 'He is sur-' vived by a widow, two sons, and d daughter. It has been unanimously decided to" appoint Dr. Alexander Muiray Dren-. man, M.8., Ch.B., P.R.C.P. (Edin.), to the position of Professor of Clinical Pathology at the University of Otago. Dr. Drennan is thirty years of age, and is at present assistant to the. Professor of Pathology in tho University of Edin* burgh. He was the most brilliant student of his year at Edinburgh. . He is to have the option of coming either in, June or in December next.—Press Association. ,
At the last meeting of the executive of the Wairarapa Automobile Association, Mr. Elgar introduced the subject) of a telephone on the Rimutaka Road hill. He said it would bo of great use to motorists who travel over the hill in case of accident or-running short of petrol. As far as he could find out tho cost would be at the rate of £25 al mile, a probah'e total cost of £150 _ to' the top of the hill. During discussion; it waß suggested that perhaps steps might bo taken to get a telephone extended to Mr. W. Davidson's house, and a motion to that effect, proposed, by;. Mr. Elgar, and seconded by Mr. H. Stewart, was carried.

Betts, Mayor of Goulbum,arrived in Auckland by the Riverina t0..) attend the Marsden centenary celebrations at tho Bay of Islands on Christ* mas Day Mr. Betts is a grandson of tho late Rev. Samuel Marsden. Mr. H. E. Hardcastle, late of theij Commercial Hotel, Wellington, haa bought the lease of the Club Hotel, Blenheim.
