LODZ EVACUATED BY GERMANS
RUSSIANS PENETRATING PRUSSIA ENEMY DEFEATED NORTH OF THE VISTULA , December 21. A message from a Berlin source announces that the Germans have evacuated Lodz, fearing an enveloping movement as a consequence of the Russians penetrating Prussia. —("Times" and Sydney "Sun" Services.) GERMANS DRIVEN BACK OVER THE FRONTIER. Rome, December 21. The Messagero's ' Petrograd correspondent confirms, the complete defeat of the Germans northward of the Vistula. The Germans were driven back into East Prussia. AUSTRIAN OFFENSIVE IN GALICIA DEFINITELY CHECKED. London, December 21. A Petrograd communique states: "The Germans in the Mlawa region have retired to the Lautenburg-Neidenburg lino. "The Austrians left five hundred dead after a' Russian bayonet attack in the Dukla region, and over a thousand Austrians •were taken prisoner." fLantenburg and Niedenburg are in East Prussia, and are respectively 30 miles west and 18 miles north of Mlawa, which is 70 miles north-north-west of Warsaw. The Dukla Pass crosses the Carpathians south-west of Jaroslav, and Dukla is about ten miles north of the pass.]
