MATE'S DUTY IN CALLING A CAPTAIN. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Napier, December 21. During a Magisterial inquiry at, Napier to-day into the stranding of tho steamer lCoutonui, which occurred at Orete, Bay of Plenty, on November 6, Captain Lambert, assessor, asked the mate why ho did not see that the captain got up when cailcd. Flow did witness know tho captain was awake? He always considered it an officer's duty after receiving instructions to call the captain to see that he did get up. Tho mate, giving ovidenco, said ho called the captain at 10.30, when the vessel was opposite Cape Runaway, but tho man at the wheel, Arthur Pe'rsson, who was near the captain's cabin all tho time, said he did not see tho mate go in before 11.35.
Counsel (Mr. Dolan) for the captain submitted that the assessor's remarks regarding the officer's duty indicated tho opinion of the Court. The Magistrate, Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, reserved his decision till 10 o'clock tomorrow mornim;.
