SULTAN OF EGYPT
ACCESSION CEREMONY ELABORATE AND IMPOSING v. Cairo, December 20. Prince Hussein has been proclaimed Sultan of Egypt. There was an elaborate ceremony and an imposing parade of English, Australian, and Native troops. The Aga Khan arrived to assist m the Accession ceremony. MANY NOTABLES PRESENT. Cairo, Decomber 20. An enormous ithrong acclaimed the Sultan on his entering the Abdin Palace. There were fivo thousand officials and notables present. Tho New Zealand troops were especially admired. SUDANESE LOYALTY. ..THE GRAND MUFTI'S OPINION. London, December 20. Commenting on tho British Government's'announcement that it keenly appreciated tho loyalty of the Sudanese, the Grand Mufti, in an article published in the Sudan "Times," contrasts the British Government and the banks with the attitude of other Governments, which in return for tho pwpU'a loyalty rob and ill-use thaw. The "Matin" says: "Egypt is the first stone detached from the arch. Let the Sublime Porte beware of the fall of othors."—("Times" and Sydney "Sun" Services.) PRINCE HUSSEIN'S REPLY. TO THE KING'S ADDRESS. (Rec December 21, 10.20 p.m.) , Cairo, December 21. Prince Hussein, in a newspaper interview, stated that ho hoped in future Egyptians would hasten to defend the country as readily as tho splendid Austrnjasinn troops whom they had tho daily opportunity of admiring at Hcliopolis had done. Prince Hussein has replied as folows to tho King's Address: —"I desire ui express to Your Majesty my deepest gratitude for tho friendly sentiments you- are graciously pleased to honour me with, also for the valuable support assured for safeguarding the integrity and independence of Egypt. will of Your Majesty and the assistance of Your Majesty's Government ill the accomplishment of my task." PROUD AND HAPPY. COMMENT BY CAIRO PAPER. (Rec. December 22, 1.20 a.m.) Melbourne, December 21. Mr. Bean, the Commonwealth correspondent, cables that the Egyptian newspaper "Misr," commenting on tlie Australian and New Zealand troops, says: "That suffices for us; wo are proud and happy to be under a British protectorate when a thousand soldiers invade tlie streets of the capita] without having to record a single act of aggression. Were these Turks we would see a succession of scenes of capitulations until the end of the war."
