FRANCO-BRITISH OUTPOSTS AT ROULERS

MARCHING ON OSTEND SIGNIFICANT LULL IN ■ POLAND 'RUSSIANS HEARING GERMAN FRONTIER • DAMAGE AT SCARBOROUGH The news this morning from West and East and near East is decidedly cheering. It was stated that General Joffre and General French finding that they had under-estimated the numbers of their effectives, and Lord Kitchener's new forces being Teady much earlier than was anticipated, the commanders decided to take the offensive im- • mediately, rather than wait until the Spring, as was originally intended. They have taken the offensive, and to some purpose. Along the Belgium coast line the Allies have reached Middlekerke, which is about five miles north of Nieuport and the same distance south of Ostend: while Franco-British outposts hold the town of Roulers, about Bis miles north of Ypres. : In the north of France the Allies have, taken six lines of German trenches from 500 to 1000 yards apart, and all along the line to Alsace-Lorraine the progress has been steady. In the jßussian theatre there is reported to be a lull along almost the whole frontier. It is stated that General von Hindenberg's objective was not Warsaw, but to prevent the invasion of German Silesia. •The Russians are still hammering at Cracow, which is the pivot of their operations, and they have been "able to beat off the flanking attacks in Poland and Galicia. The Austrians helped by, the Germans, have made desperate efforts to expel the Russians from the Carpathians, and this it appears was forced upon them by politioal considerations, Count Tisza, the Hungarian Prime Minister, has intimated in a speech in Parliament that if Austria permits Hungary to be invaded Hungary would separately defend herself, and emphasised the point that Hungary was an independent State. Austria has been un- • able to achieve any "military success; on the contrary, the little State of Servia. which she set out to punish, has administered the most ' .crushing defeat on the Austrian Army, whose General is now to be ■ court-'martialled. '

There are; no naval items to-day, but there is a good deal of scathing comment on tie German raid on the English Bast Coast towns. It is also interesting to note that Prince Buelow, ex-Imperial Chancellor of Germany, has been sent as Ambassador to Italy to endeavour to prevent the Italians participating' in the war, and also to take the initiative in a; peace movement, but according to Italian sentiment these efforts of Germany have come too late. In'the Near East the proclamation of a protectorate of Egypt and appointing Prince Hassein as Sultan, has been favourably received by the Egyptians. The new.. Sultan is thoroughly in accord with British policy, and as he is a descendant of the Mehemet Ali family, he will be able to hold the Mohammedans. The outlook for the Christmas week is distinotly good.
