A dispatch'from Constantinople says that the Sultan has declared that the actions-of the Allies compelled- him to proclaim a holy war against the Christian world in defence of a concerted policy which threatened.the destruction of Mohammedanism. GERMAN STEAMER SUNK, BY A RUSSIAN WARSHIP. Petrograd, December 17. Official.—A Russian warship ordered the crew to leave the German steamer • Derintio near Kerason. Only two Turkish officers'and twelve soldiers obeyed. They were picked up. The Derintic was bombarded and blew up. Kerason is a seaport on the Blaok Sea, 70 miles west of Trebizond. There is no steamer named Derintio in Lloyd's Register. The vessel was probably the Derindjo, a steamer of 3873 tons, owned by the German Levant Line, Hamburg. Advices from Constantinople state that Field-Marshal Von dor Goltz has been appointed military commander at Constantinople, and Acting-War Minister; the German Admiral Suchom is the temporary Marine Minister; Euver Pasha commander of the troops in Anatolia ; Djemel Pasha commander in Syria. Sir Edward Grey's (Foreign Minister) notice announcing a 'protectorate., over Egypt, states that in view of the state of war arising out of Turkey's action, Turkey's suzerainty in Egypt is terminated, and Britain will adopt all measures for the defence of Egypt and the protection of its inhabitants and in- | terests.
