NEWTOWN SCHOOL

.. There was a good deal of enthusiasm in the breaking-up of Newiown School yesterday afternoon. The school is reported as having had a very prosperous and successful year, and everyone was in.the best of spirits. Mr. Castle, chairman of the committee, presided, and other members present were Mrs. Wright, Mrs.' Webb, and Mr. Read. Several visitors and friends also attended. Mr. Castle congratulated the successful students, and wished one and all the compliments of the season. In all 95 first-class and 106 second-class certificates for good attendance were presented, representing nearly onefourth of the school. A highly creditable record of the school's performances in field sports was given, and R. Read and ; A. M'Kinlay -were decorated with the much-coveted • "rep." cap for football. An anonymous donor had given prizes for tennis in the Sixth and Fifth Standards respectively, and these ivere presented to Gladys Leys and Norman Hart. : ;

The easay competition for prizes presented by tho Women's Christian Temperance Union resulted in a victory for Delia Spiers, with Una Castlo second. An extra prize was provided for the'best boy competitor, Alox. Heron. It was reported that the quality of the essays sent in was very nigh. A surprise was the -unannounced presentation to Mr. J. C. Burns, M.A., of a fine travellingrug, by members of his class. Miss Hutchen had been similarly honoured by her class the day before. After an interchange of cordial wisnes between headmaster, committee, staff, and pupils, an enjoyable gathering dispersed with the singing of tho National Anthem. SUSSEX SQUARE CONVENT HIGH SCHOOL

The annual breaking up ceremony.in comection with the Susses Square Convent High Scnool took place yesterday. Liberal cash donations towards the prize lists were received from parents and friends, but the pupils decided to forgo their reivarde in order tnat the amount might be forwarded to the Belgian Relief Fund. 'In-the aiternoon the scholars held a garden party. Among those present was the Kev. MISS DIXON'S SCHOOL

Tho. prizes -won by the boys at Miss Dixon's private school were distributed by the Rev. A. M. Johnson, M.A., yesterday afternoon, many of the boys' parents being present. Several very pretty and interesting displays were given by the pupils, and congratulatory remarks were made by Mr. Johnson and Mr. Tripe about the good work done by Miss Dixon during the year. Mr.. Johnson, in announcing that Miss Dixon's School had been taken over by Bank's College, said he was glad that Miss Dixon had decided to join the s'taff i of this college. This institution had' a large number of students on the roll, and did excellent work. Mr. H. H. Cornish, M.A., principal of Banks'e College, announced what arrangements had been made for the primary and secondary departments. He stated.that two new masters, both of them experienced and successful teachers; had been added to the (staff. It was the aim of the college to take boys at the age of five years and -upwards, and prepare them in the different departments until they were ready for a commercial or university career.
