ANXIOUS TIME-FOE SETTLERS. (By Tekurauh.-Prese Aesoolatdon.) Walpawa, December 17. Extensive bush and grass fires are raging ia the Blackburn-Wakarara district, the result of exceptionally heavy winds. The settlers have experienced an anxious time, and only the exertions of helpers from neighbouring towns prevented houses being biwnt. J. Cook lost bie house and furniture. Napier, December 17. Bush fires are causing much concern in the Puketitiri district. One house, two wool sheds and clip, and several light bridges have been destroyed, whilst a number of other places are threatened. OTAWHAO BLOCK SWEPT. Dannovlrke, Decembor 17. Tho fires which have been rnging at Ngapaeniru and tho surrounding districts on Wednesday became very severe, and a number of residents of Dannevirke wont out to assist the sottlere in fighting the flames. No housos havo been lost in this locality, but many stock have perished. The (ires are etill burning. Tho nowly-sottled Otawhno Block was also swopt by firo, and it is reported that five settlors, Mcssm. C. L. Olsen, Clayton, Hunt, Pritdiard, ttml Bee, have had their _ residences swept away. Their losses in other directions are heavy.
