THE TASKS ASSIGNED THE AUSTRIANS _ London, December IG. Petrograd offioiuls are surprised at tho perseverance of the Austrians, despite repeated staggering defeats. They have lost thirty-six generals' and 190 colonels, chiefly of Hungarian regiments. ; The Vienna journal "Noue Frcie Presse" admits defeat, but urges the nation not to despair. The newspaper "Freindenblatt" asks its readers to believe that tho Germans are botraying the interests of Austria, in order to protect tho road to Berlin. The Petrograd correspondent of the 'I'imes" says: "The Germans continue to impose the most difficult tasks on the Austrians, who were forced to act as rearguards to German columns, and check tho Russians on the San River while the Germans retired from Warsaw. The Austrians were ordered not to permit the Russians to pass Cracow into Silesia, ,'and were also ordered to attempt an envelopment of the Russians south of Przemysl, thii involving the crossing of the snow-clad Carpathians." The Servians' success, especially the recapture of Belgrade, caused consternation, in Vienna and Budapest. Discontent towards Germany is increaeing. Servia is bow entirely clear of Austrians.
