THE TURF

THE WOODVILLE MEETING FIRST DAY. REWI POTO WINS BIG HANDICAP. (By Toleffi'aph.—Snecial, Oorreepondent.) ■• - Woodvillo, December 16. The Summer Sleeting of the Woodville Jockey Club commenced.this morning in fair weather, but a very high wind blew all the afternoon. The attendance was very satisfactory, and speculation was good. The sum of -C 11.523 passed through the totalisator, which.is 'i;l9oi less thjin for the corresponding day last year. Croesus, a member of 1. S. O'Neills Hastings team, was much in demand in the Maiden Plate.: Others to receive support were:—Kahumangu, Need, and Pacifio Slope. The race took lmin. 20 sec., to run; which will show how tho gale affected the horses. When the field settled down Croesus was showing olear from Combustion; and this was the order to the finish. ' Jem finished well, ia third place. , There were three ecratchings in the Hurdles. "Merry Guy showed out for a mile, when Stagnant and Aratiatia took charge, but the former. jumped badly, :and lost her position. RoUnd the home bend Master Strowan was prominent, but approaching the last fence Captain Mackay took charge, and.won by a couple of lengths from Aratiatia. Merry Guy was close up, and then came Master Strowan and' Glen Nevis. .: The latter was ■favourite. W. Ferris, rider .of the winner, was .cautioned for .crossing. . _. ' Square Deal closed up first choice in the Grandstand Handicap, but he got ohopped, out after the start, and his ohance was extinguished. At the end of a , furlong Orleans /was in front from La'dify and Montana. His Eminence became prominent rounding the bend, where Plunder also 'moved up. Ladify was first into the straight, but .she. was Unable to. withstand. the challenge of Plunder,- who won by a neck. Janitor was third, and then came Shepherd's Bush and His Eminence. Lubriline whipped-in the field.. ■ Rewi Poto ,was a strong order in the Woodville Handicap, for which Kooya, Kimbombi, and Pursefiller were scratched. At the start Wild Lupin led the field, and going out of the straight the Hawera horse was just clear of Rewi Poto, Victoris,. and Tho Rover. Tho last-named moved up at the back, and was iu second place Tounding the bend. At the three-furlong post St. Elmn ran up to, the leader's quarters, but he stumbled badly, and lost his position. ' Rewi Poto took charge a furlong from home, and won very comfortably/ .Wild Lupin had to be ridden out to beat Victoris. ■ Stepney and Sir Knoi were"'next. The latter was finishing at : a :.great rate. ■.■ Marshal Macdonald was well supported,; but he, shaped very badly,, and was never prominent. ' Gold Soult was ;made the hottest order ;.of the day in the Flying Hack Handicap, but once more he was beaten, though this time;he finished in third place. The Wellington-owned Miraculous won nicely at the finish, while Miss Kelly beat Gold Soult/by a head. Two rank outsiders in Vladineau and Tβ Araroa were next. Intelligible began ; very fast, end soon had the.field strung out, but she stopped badly in the etrateht. ~- • . .' Sandstream, who has "been off the scene for a considerable time, made a successful re-entry in the Borough Handicap, which-he won after a good finish with. Negative. The win. was totally unexpected, and th 6 return he gave was easily' a record for several years past.. Lady Alicia and Black Lupin were the favourites, but both ran badly. The Welter Hack Handicap went to the very useful' Fashion Plate, who was ridden by B- Deeley. Roumania, who was well supported, finished second, arid Field Force, after, making most of the running, was close up third. Elevate and Itanfurly led. till the six furlongs, wTien Field : Force took charge, and piu a big break on the,.field. j v,Roymania and Want put in runs., from theV'bottom oi tho-straight, and a little later Fashion Plate joined in, and, outstaying the others, she won handsomely. Want and Elevate were "the. next to finish. In the Electric Handicap several of the -runners were well supported.- There was some delay at the barrier, and when it lifted , Simnle' , Sam began very smartly, from'. Our , King and' Epworth. ! The-Tara-' naki horse put a big break on the field, and though he was tiring badly at the finish, ■he lasted long enough to win by a length from Allen Doone. Mount Victoria, Master Achilles, and Evadne. were

the next: to finish. " Goldstream got a bad bump just after the start, and he and his rider nearly jiarted company.. (By Ifelegraph.—Press Association.) ' .':■■ Wqodville, December 16.
