SOUTH TARANAKI V. WANGANUI. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Wanganul, DecemTSer 16. The first representative cricket matoh of the season commenced to-day, when Waiiganui, holders of the Hawko Oup, mot South Taranaki. The wicket was in good order, but play was somewhat hampered by a gab of wind. Batting first, the homo side compiled 388, the "tail" showing surprisingly good form. The bowling of the visitors was rather weak. South Taranaki replied with 105 for five wickets when stumps wero drawn. Penny hit with freedom for 57 not out. Tho match will be continued to-day. Instead of the ueual mid-week oricket competition yesterday, a fifteen - a side troal game was played on the Basin Reserve, so that a eenior team might be picked to play Wairarapa on New Year's Day.
