PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL
. At the fortnightly meeting of the Petono Borough Council, held last evening, an application to screen a suitable picture on Christmas Day was granted to a picture proprietary. It was resolved to reply to an inquiry from the Greytown Borough Council for street lamps that council has nono for sale. Regarding the' drainage alterations to the premises of Mr. AV. B. Nicholson, it was resolved that the borough by-laws must he complied with. It was decided to forward certain potitions received for and agninst the early closing of furniture shops to the Labour Department, with a request tlmt it advise tho council as to whether the signatories are house-furnishers within the meaning of the Trades Union Act. The Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) was appointed to represent the council at a conference to be held for the purpose of fi-iing a weekly half-holiday. It was' afreed to fix the dog-tax for 1915 at 2s. 6d. for rabbit, and 10s. for other dogs. In respoot to the Christmas holidays it was resolved that a ballot should be taken of the sewerage employees as to .the length of holiday they require. The engineer's report stated that tho trench opened by the Post and Telegraph Department had been filled, for which a charge is to bo made against the Department. . The formation of the Campbell Terrace extension will be commenced this week, and regarding the removal of a house-in connection with this work, the contractor holds that the council having deprived the house of its drainage and water'fittings should provide new services. The engineer's contention is that the council having agreed to pay a lump sum in full settlement of all claims, the owner is liable for the new connections. The sea-wall has been completed as far as the' old borough boundary, and tho brickwork of the boat-sheds commenced and will be pushed on with diligence. The caretaker's house at the Recreation Ground is expected to be ready, for occupation before, Christmas. The large gate on the Brittania Street entrance to the grounds was damaged last week, allegedly by a motor-cyclist, and the matter has been put in the hands for the police. Two buildings permits had been issued,. of a total value of £312, for which £1 10s. had been received for fees. The total value for tho year in this connection was' £12,7(34, fees £34 15s. The sewerage engineer (Mr. R. Fox) reported that in No. -2 section 56 houses had services laid, 'five manholes had been completed, and two lampholes constructed. The total cost of the works to date was £26,258 13s. 3d. The gas manager (Mr. J. C. Masters) reported the amount of coal sold for the mouth.was 64 tons 19cwt.; 70 tons of coke were in stock, and 2684 gallons of.tar..had been sold. Seven new gas services, had been laid, five services renewed, and two gas-mains repaired, ten new meters fixed, seven exchanged, and four repaired, and four cookers had been fixed. Five. new water services had been laid, nino servicos repaired, two mains repaired. The borough inspector (Mr. W. B. Gough) reported that 172 houses had been visited during the month. Written notices for various sanitary and other defects and in reference to Topairs to •fences had been served on various owners, and were receiving attention.
