OUTBREAK IN A BOARDING HOUSE " INMATES NARROW ESCAPE OF tßjr IWeßTana—Press iasoolAtlon.l Auokland, December 14. A fire in Hobson Sticet at 1 o'clock this morning gutted seven rooms of a large, boardingUouso owned by C. F. Bennett and occupied by Mrs. M. Marshall. Mrs. Marshall and two children Blept on the ground floor, and were awakened by smoko. Sho took the children in her arms and jumped from a window 6ft. to the ground. Ten boarders sleeping on the premises had narrow escapes. One jumped from the roof of a lean-to 20ft. An old man was assisted from a room while tho passage was ablaze. COLOURED MAN BURNED TO DEATH. Taihape, December 14. A four-roomed outhouse -near Capill's boardinghouse was destroyed by fire yesterdayat 1.30 a.m. There was no hope of saving the building, and an inspection later found the remains of John •Williams. - a Cingalee, a recent arrival from Hawke's Bay. It was not known when the fire was discovered that the building had any occupants.

CORDIAL FACTORY DESTROYED. . Napier, December 14. Plowman's cordial factory, at the corner of Shakespeare and Battery Roads, was totally destroyed by fire this morning. The outbreak started in a cellar, and had a good hold of the main building when discovered. The water pressure was not as good as it might have been, and the brigade was unable to do more than confine the fire to the factory. The loss is heavy. One building was insured in the Norwich Union for £1900, and the plant and stock in the same office for £6100. The insurances do not nearly cover the loss, the stock being ialued at £13,000. HEAVY LOSS IN A TIMBER YARD. Christchureh, December 14. A joinery shop and milling shed forming part of the Goss Timber Yard, Peterborough Street, was totally destroyed by fire early this evening The damage is estimated from £4000 to £5000, and is covered by insurance. Nothing is known as to the causo of tho outbreak.
