The Commonwealth Labour Industrial report for. 1913 contains the first complete analysis of tho number, effect, causes,' results, .and settlements of ; strikes and lock-outs. There were 208 strikes, which involved 50,283 people, losing 623,528 working days, and £287.737 in wages. The results of sixty-four of these favoured the workpeople, and sixty-four the employers. Sixty-nine were compromised, while eleven nail indefinite" results. Wnges disputes caused seventy-seven disputes; hours, ten; trade-unionism, thirteen;, employment of certain persons, forty-four; working conditions, • fifty-one;- sympathetic strikes, five; other causes, eight. ; Disputes which were settled direct : totalled 119; intervention by a. third party settled seventeen; compulsory conferences, 'nineteen; Arbitration Court, twenty-two.
