AUSTRALIA'S FIGHUNG SHIPS DESTROYER DERWENT COMV- P.LETED. Melbourne, Decembers .14. The destroyer Derwent is complete. She will be launched on December 19. The Australian destroyers Derwent, Swan, and Torrens were ordered 'for construction at the' New South Wales Government Dockyards, and are of the same type as the Yarra, 'Parramatta, ■and Warrego (now in commission), which wore built at English yards, transported to Australia in section's, and reconstructed. The Derwent is of 700 tons displacement, measures 246 ft. in length", and 24ft. beam, and draws about Bft. of water. She is designed for a .speed of about 28 knots, with three screws driven by engines of 9500 and is armed with one 4in; and three 12-poundor guns', and three torpedo tubes. Her complement will be. sixty-sis officers and men. THE NORTH SEA TRADE ROUT. PROBLEM FOR BIG LINERS. I i (Rec. December 14, 6.30 p.m.) London, December 13.A' rumour is prevalent in business circles in Britain that a number "f large foreign liners have been permitted to use the. northern route to and from the North Sea. It is understood that the Admiralty, owing to certain vessels under neutral flags, was compelled to take measures to render this route dangerous to all shipping. > Apparently certain foreign companies havo made representations in London that navigation by the southern route is attended with dangers to the big liners in wintry weather, and they obtained special concessions.—"Times" and Sydney "Sun" services.
